From a home full of music & watching his Grandmother play the organ in some big church event or another, these influences soon played a part in developing Mal’s own musical abilities. Another strong influence was John Peel, BBC Radio1. In the seventies Mal was invited to go on John’s show, ‘The Sound of the Seventies’, throughout Mal’s time on the show, John would make sure his friends were listening… this, then led to Mal being signed to Elton John’s newly formed record label, Rocket Record Company. Elton sent Mal a telegram wishing Mal all the best on his first recording. Mal was still at school at the time! Mal went on to study Land Economy at Christ’s College, Cambridge & eventually left Elton’s record label & went to London to start recording his new songs. With his own TV show in Wales, The Mal Pope Show, winning numerous awards at the BAFTA Cymru Wales annual television awards, songs for Cliff Richard, signing a new record deal with Larry Page (legendary 60’s record producer & manager for the Kinks & the Troggs), Mal was certainly becoming a household name in Wales.
